Why schools are moving tests to CBT
Students sit JAMB's UTME on a computer, and more external and internal examinations are going the same way. A student whose first computer-based test is the real UTME loses time learning how to navigate the screen. Schools that run their own CBT tests during SS 2 and SS 3 give students that practice early.
CBT also saves teachers a great deal of time. Marking forty scripts of objective questions by hand for each class, then entering the scores, can take days. With CBT exam software the marking of objective questions is instant and the scores are already in the system.
Building your question bank
Every question lives in a question bank that belongs to your school. Teachers can add questions directly or prepare them in Excel and import a CSV file, which is the fastest way to bring in questions you already have from past tests. Each question records its class, subject, difficulty level, options, correct answer and mark.

Setting a CBT exam
An online exam is set for a class, one or more arms and one or more subjects. You choose the exam window (start and end date and time), the duration each student has once they start, the pass mark and how many times a student may attempt it. Instructions appear on the screen before the student begins.
Options such as negative marking, showing marks to students and whether results are published immediately are set per exam. Schools that charge for mock examinations can attach an exam fee to an online exam.
Marking and results
When a student submits, objective questions are marked straight away. If the exam includes written questions, the teacher opens the student's answers, awards marks for each one and the final score is completed. You can generate positions for the exam and decide when students can see their results.
Because the scores are already inside EduMatrix, you avoid copying CBT results into a separate spreadsheet before they can be used.
What you need to run CBT in your school
Students need a device with a web browser and an internet connection during the exam window. Many schools use a computer room for exam classes and let other classes write short tests on tablets or phones. There is no special software to install on each computer; the exam opens in the browser when the student logs in.
For supervised examinations, most schools combine the exam window and attempt limit with invigilation in the room. For homework-style practice tests, a longer window and more attempts let students practise at their own pace.
